Jake Kuyer
Environmental economist with fifteen years of advisory across the public, private and non-profit sectors, mainly in the UK, the EU and North America. Based in Vancouver.
Background
Jake's career has centred on using economics to value climate, nature, social and economic outcomes, so they can be weighed against costs. Stakeholders regularly interpret value differently, and the evidence to resolve that friction is often missing. His work has applied cost-benefit analysis and appraisal to support policy, guidance and funding cases, and to show where investment delivers the most value.
For government clients, applied research projects for Defra and the Office for National Statistics on urban ecosystem services valuation, developing and implementing natural capital accounting approaches across government departments, a secondment to the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, contributions to EU and UN guidance on applied ecosystem accounting, and environmental risk and carbon assessment across major infrastructure projects. For local authorities, analysis of environmental, social and nature-positive strategies, including assessment of natural capital market pilots.
Internationally, leading a natural capital accounting programme in the Caribbean, which meant reconciling competing requirements across government, business and the public. That included independent deployments to small island states, working with government departments, local business and tourism operators under resource constraints.
For multinational businesses, climate and nature risk methodologies for financial analysis, supply chain impact mapping, decarbonisation strategy, and reporting aligned to IFRS-ISSB, CSRD, TCFD and TNFD. Alongside that, building an economics and sustainability advisory practice serving major corporations, trade bodies and NGOs, and C-suite engagement on company materiality frameworks and decarbonisation plans.
For non-profit organisations, social impact frameworks that let them demonstrate their value proposition to funders, including direct stakeholder research on contested areas and with vulnerable groups.
All of this led naturally to cascadiaen, which applies that experience and insight to building resilience.
